House of Wettin-Dernbach Challenges Claims Identifying R-DF98 as the House of Wettin Y-DNA Lineage
House Scientists Cite Big Y-700 Testing, Original Medieval Records, and the 1599 Charter in Support of Their Position
August 4, 2026
The House of Wettin-Dernbach today reaffirmed its scientific and historical position regarding the paternal Y-DNA lineage associated with the medieval House of Wettin, stating that claims identifying R-DF98 as the confirmed House of Wettin haplogroup have not been demonstrated by published scientific evidence or supported by original historical documentation.
The statement follows correspondence from genetic genealogist Iain McDonald, who has argued that the House of Wettin should be associated with R-DF98 and who has challenged the interpretation presented by the House of Wettin-Dernbach in its published research.
According to the House scientists, the central issue is not whether differing interpretations are permitted within genetic genealogy, but whether a hypothesis should be presented as though it were an established scientific conclusion.
“Scientific conclusions must be supported by tested evidence and documentary records,” the House scientists stated. “A phylogenetic prediction, regardless of how strongly held, is not equivalent to scientific confirmation.”
The House Position
The House of Wettin-Dernbach maintains that its published research relies upon two independent categories of evidence:
- Original historical documents.
- Big Y-700 Y-chromosome testing.
The House notes that its research includes the original 1599 charter, preserved in the German archives with its original signatures and seal, which identifies Heinrich von Dernbach as the son of Theodoric I, Margrave of Meissen. According to the House, that charter forms one of the principal historical foundations for its published conclusions regarding the von Dernbach paternal line.
The House further states that its Turnbow Big Y-700 results place the documented paternal family within the R-DF96 branch of haplogroup R-U106.
The House also cites its R-U106 Research Report, published on July 31, 2026, which presents its analysis of the Turnbow Big Y-700 results, the downstream mutations identified through testing, and the historical records examined by the authors.
According to the House scientists, the combination of documentary evidence and Big Y-700 testing provides the basis for their continued advocacy that R-DF96 represents the paternal lineage associated with the House of Wettin as presented in their research.
Concerns Regarding R-DF98
The House scientists state that they have reviewed Mr. McDonald’s interpretation and disagree with his conclusion that R-DF98 has been established as the House of Wettin lineage.
Specifically, the House argues that:
- no published scientific study has conclusively identified R-DF98 as the confirmed paternal haplogroup of the medieval House of Wettin;
- no original medieval document identifies R-DF98 as the Wettin paternal lineage;
- publicly available evidence has not, in the House’s view, established the downstream placement of the medieval Wettin dynasty or later Albertine and Ernestine branches in a manner that conclusively supports identifying the House of Wettin as R-DF98.
The House emphasizes that phylogenetic hypotheses should remain hypotheses until supported by sufficient scientific testing and corroborating historical evidence.
Scientific Inquiry Requires Evidence
The House states that it welcomes scientific debate but believes conclusions should be based upon tested results rather than inference alone.
“The scientific method requires evidence that can be examined, tested, and reproduced,” the House scientists said. “Historical genealogy likewise requires original documentary support. Neither discipline is strengthened when predictions are presented as established fact.”
The House further noted that continuing Big Y-700 testing and ongoing archival research may clarify unresolved questions in the future.
Continuing Research
The House of Wettin-Dernbach announced that its scientists and authors will continue their research into the paternal history of the House of Wettin and the House of Dernbach.
The House reaffirmed that it will continue to advocate, based on its interpretation of the evidence currently available, that R-DF96 is the paternal haplogroup supported by its genetic and documentary research, while continuing to challenge assertions identifying R-DF98 as the House of Wettin lineage until, in its view, sufficient scientific testing and original historical documentation establish that conclusion. Lain McDonald has not provided the requested scientific and historical information to the House as of the release or this Press Release.
The House emphasized that scholarly disagreements should be resolved through additional evidence, independent review, and continued research—not through unsupported assumptions or by proposing that the documented paternal lineage and surname of the House of Wettin and House of Dernbach descendants the Turnbow family be reclassified to support Mr. McDonald’s interpretation of the available genetic evidence.
