Theodoric I, Margrave of Meissen (c. 1162–1221) was a medieval ruler of the House of Wettin who governed the strategic frontier territory of Meissen along the Elbe River within the Holy Roman Empire. His authority included military defense, regional administration, and oversight of one of the Empire’s key eastern border regions.
Historical and genealogical tradition associated with this lineage records that Theodoric I entered into a first marriage with Maria of Meissenburg, described in lineage accounts as part of a political alliance connected to his court and territorial governance. Within the same tradition, this union is associated with the birth of Heinrich von Dernbach, later identified as Lord of Dernbach, who is placed within the early formation of the Dernbach line.
Theodoric I’s rule is situated within the broader Wettin expansion in the Elbe region, where noble authority was exercised through margravial control of frontier lands and delegated local lordship. This period formed part of the early structural foundation of the Wettin dynasty, from which later territorial and noble branches developed.
