House of Wettin-Dernbach Reaffirms Its Scientific and Historical Position on the House of Wettin Paternal Lineage

Official Statement
The House of Wettin-Dernbach Foundation today reaffirmed its scientific and historical position concerning the paternal lineage of the medieval House of Wettin following recent correspondence regarding the interpretation of Y-chromosome DNA evidence.
The Foundation’s Research Division stated that the identification of R-DF98 as the definitive paternal haplogroup of the House of Wettin has not been established by published scientific evidence or supported by original historical documentation.
The Foundation’s position follows the publication of the U106 Research Report authored by genetic genealogist Iain McDonald on July 31, 2026, in which R-DF98 was presented as the House of Wettin lineage.
After reviewing the report and subsequent correspondence, the House scientists concluded that the evidence presently available does not support treating R-DF98 as a scientifically or historically established conclusion.
The Foundation’s Position
The House of Wettin-Dernbach Foundation maintains that its conclusions are based upon two independent bodies of evidence:
- Original medieval archival documents.
- Big Y-700 Y-chromosome testing.
Unlike interpretations based primarily upon phylogenetic prediction, the Foundation states that its research combines historical documentation with genetic evidence to reconstruct the documented paternal lineage of the House.
Original Historical Evidence
The Foundation’s historical research is centered upon original archival documents examined during preparation of its published works.
Among the most significant is the 1599 Charter, preserved in the German archives with its original signatures and seal intact.
According to the Foundation’s research, the charter identifies Heinrich von Dernbach as the son of Theodoric I, Margrave of Meissen, providing a historical basis for the paternal connection presented in the Foundation’s publications.
The Foundation further relies upon additional medieval and early modern records documenting the continuity of the von Dernbach family.
These records formed the basis of the Foundation’s books:

Scientific Evidence
The Foundation’s Research Division has conducted Big Y-700 testing on multiple members of the Turnbow paternal family.
According to the Foundation, those results consistently place the documented paternal family within the R-DF96 branch of haplogroup R-U106.
The Foundation states that its interpretation is based upon the available Big Y-700 evidence together with the documented historical record.
Response to the R-DF98 Interpretation
The Foundation respectfully disagrees with the conclusion presented in Mr. McDonald’s U106 Research Report that identifies R-DF98 as the House of Wettin paternal lineage.
According to the Foundation, that conclusion presently lacks sufficient supporting evidence because:
- no published scientific study has conclusively confirmed R-DF98 as the medieval House of Wettin paternal haplogroup;
- no original medieval document identifies R-DF98 as the House of Wettin lineage;
- the Foundation believes the available evidence does not conclusively establish the downstream placement of the medieval Wettin dynasty or the later Albertine and Ernestine branches in a manner that confirms R-DF98 as the definitive House of Wettin lineage.
The Foundation emphasizes that phylogenetic interpretations should remain open to review until supported by comprehensive scientific testing and corroborating historical evidence.
Continuing Scientific Research
The House scientists announced that they will continue their research into the paternal history of the House of Wettin, the House of Dernbach, and the Turnbow paternal line.
The Foundation will continue to advocate, based upon its interpretation of the evidence presently available, that R-DF96 represents the paternal haplogroup supported by its genetic and historical research.
The Foundation will likewise continue to question interpretations identifying R-DF98 as the House of Wettin lineage until additional scientific evidence and original historical documentation establish that conclusion.
